Introduction
Welcome to the course Introduction to the New Testament: A Postcolonial Perspective. This course aims to provide a fresh lens through which to study the New Testament, exploring its texts against the backdrop of Roman imperialism. As we delve into the socio-political context of early Christianity, we will examine how themes of power, empire, and resistance are woven into the fabric of the biblical narrative.
Using postcolonial theory, we will analyze key New Testament writings to uncover how the early Christian movement responded to the forces of colonial rule and cultural domination. Throughout the course, you will engage critically with concepts such as hybridity, resistance, and marginalization, gaining insights into how these dynamics shaped the messages and actions of early Christians.
Our discussions will not only shed light on the historical conditions of the New Testament period but also explore how these ancient texts can speak powerfully into today’s postcolonial contexts. By the end of the course, you will have the tools to interpret biblical texts in ways that highlight voices of resistance, liberation, and justice, making the New Testament relevant for modern struggles against oppression and injustice.
